i-Tree System Requirements

Requirements for desktop & laptop computers

Minimum hardware:

  • 1.6 GHz or faster processor
  • 1024 MB of available RAM
  • Hard drive with at least 3 GB free space
  • Monitor resolution of 1024 x 768 or greater

Software:

  • Windows 7 or higher operating system
  • Internet Explorer 9 or higher
  • Adobe Reader 9.0 or newer
  • .NET Framework 4.0 or newer
  • Microsoft Access 2010 Database Engine or newer (for Eco v6)
  • Microsoft Excel for i-Tree Streets
  • Crystal Report 2008 Runtime (included in i-Tree installation)
  • For PDA users, Windows Mobile Device Center 6.0 or above (included in i-Tree installation)

*Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and is not compatible with Eco v6 in the i-Tree 2016 installation and beyond

Apple Mac Users

The i-Tree desktop installation is not compatible or supported for use with the Apple Mac operating system. Apple users have run i-Tree successfully using alternate solutions such as dual-booting and Parallel systems allowing Macs to run Windows programs. See the learning video on "Options for installing and running i-Tree on a Mac computer" or refer to Apple Mac Support for further exploration.

Requirements for field data collection devices

Smartphones, tablets, and other web-enabled mobile devices:

The newer Mobile Data Collection system, available in i-Tree Streets and Eco v5 and v6, is designed to work with newer web-enabled mobile devices. This is not a stand-alone app or program that is loaded directly on a smartphone or device. You will need to first create and configure an i-Tree Streets or Eco project for use with the mobile data collection system. The mobile system runs on a devices' web browser and relies on internet connectivity, web browser HTML5 functionality and device data caching capability. Most recent browser versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Safari are compatible; IE 9 and 10 have limitations.

Newer iPhones, iPads, Android and other devices are HTML-5 compatible and have data caching capabilities that allow for data collection to continue if internet connectivity is disrupted in the field. Some devices such as Windows Phone 7 smartphones and older devices are limited and will require continuous connectivity to advance through the online web forms.

Testing your mobile device

You can also test your devices' capability for data collection using one of the example data collection links on the Mobile Data Collection page. Change to airplane mode after entering data for a tree to see how the browser will function when connectivity is lost.

PDAs requirements:

Older hand held PDAs can be used with i-Tree Streets and the legacy Eco v5 applications. The PDA utility is not compatible with Eco v6. The PDA Utility was developed to run on a .NET Framework and because of the variety of older PDA devices available, users may occasionally discover inconsistencies running i-Tree applications.

PDA devices with the following base specifications are recommended for optimal performance and compatibility with i-Tree applications:

  • Windows Mobile 5.0 - 6.5 operating system
  • 240 x 320 screen resolution

Requirements for GPS devices (i-Tree Streets only)

Collecting GPS coordinates during an i-Tree Streets project is optional with the new mobile data collection system. GPS-enabled PDA devices running the Windows Mobile 5.0 - 6.5 operating system or compatible devices paired with NMEA Bluetooth or serial GPS devices may also be used. Integrated GPS is not available for Eco data collection at this time.

i-Tree Streets users have successfully used the Trimble Juno SB, Trimble Nomad, Pharos Traveler 525 and MWg Zinc II, among others. Functionality of GPS devices can differ, however, and some devices may not operate as well as others. For example, the Pharos m619 GPS does not work properly with Streets and is currently not recommended. The Streets mobile data collection system GPS capability relies on the GPS functionality of your smartphone or tablet.
