i-Tree International Academy - Winter 2025

The US Forest Service’s International Programs (FS-IP) and the Northern Research Station, in partnership with the Davey Institute, are offering an international online training program designed to introduce the i-Tree suite of tools to global participants. The Academy instruction will be delivered by experienced members of the i-Tree project team, and guest instructors, focused on helping participants learn i-Tree applications which can be used to assess the value of urban forests and greenspaces. How to join sessions:

All sessions will be streamed live via Zoom will be recorded and posted to this page so that you can catch up on anything you missed. You are encouraged to submit any questions related to the course via info@itreetools.org. There will be opportunities to ask questions during the live sessions and office hours.

Academy Schedule

Each session is two hours long and offered at 10:00 AM (Eastern US time).

Session 1 - December 4th: Academy Introduction & i-Tree Database overview. Course learning objectives, format and instructor introductions. i-Tree introduction, key concepts, website, and resources. i-Tree Database overview of options for international uses.

Session 2 - December 11th: i-Tree Eco,i-Tree Canopy, and MyTree. Online tools for assessing trees, tree planting projects, and more. Learn Canopy and Eco’s capabilities, limitations, and requirements for global projects. Explore tool uses for engagement, education, advocacy and improving management.

Session 3 - January 8th: i-Tree Canopy: Estimating tree cover and understanding land cover. Be able to conduct your own tree canopy survey using i-Tree Canopy. Understand how i-Tree Canopy can be used to estimate change in canopy over time. Explore the advantages and challenges of using i-Tree Canopy.

Session 4 - January 15th: i-Tree Eco project phases, options, and more. Gain an understanding of Eco’s underlying modeling components, project phases and overall capabilities for international users.

Session 5 - January 22nd: i-Tree Eco and Database. Explore Eco’s different international use options based on data availability and level of integration. Learn how i-Tree Database can be used by international users to submit new location information, hourly pollution, precipitation and new tree species

Session 6 - February 5th: i-Tree Eco project creation, data collection, and processing. Learn the steps involved in setting up a basic inventory project or sample project working with the Eco desktop software. Explore how to use the Eco mobile data collection system, manual data entry form and import system for use with external tree data

Session 7 - February 12th: Eco reports, mapping, and case studies. Explore Eco’s reporting capabilities and how information can improve understanding and management of tree and forest resources

Session 8: February 26th, Participant i-Tree Action Plan. Participant action plan presentations with team review and feedback
